In September 2014, the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District – after years of planning – created a website where citizens could look up restaurant inspection reports in Champaign County.
Reports for more than 1,000 restaurants are available on the site, which is constantly updated and go back to 2008.
The link to the inspections is not prominently displayed on the home page so here is a way to find them beginning on the home page. (Be patient. There are several screens to go through.)
First, go to www.c-uphd.org. Scroll down to the bottom of the site and click “Environmental Health” as in Figure 1.
Figure 1
Next, click on “Food inspection reports” as in Figure 2.
Figure 2
Next click on the “Enter inspection reports database” bar as in Figure 3.
Figure 3
Now, you can click on search inspection as in Figure 4.
Figure 4
You can play around with the next page, choosing restaurants by name, zip code, and other choices. For this example, you might want to see restaurants that failed. To do that, you need to go to the “Adjusted Score Range” box and put in the range of “0” to” 35” as shown in Figure 5. A restaurant fails if it has an adjusted score of 35 or below.
Figure 5
If you wanted choose by a certain date or dates, you can use the “Inspection Date Range” box as shown in Figure 6.
Figure 6
Under the “keyword” drop down, as mentioned before you can filter by establishment name, address or city as in Figure 7.
Figure 7
Once all the information you want is entered in the advanced search, click “search” at the bottom of the page to pull up restaurant inspection reports as shown in Figure 8.
Figure 8
There is also an option to browse reports by first letter under the “inspections” category at the bottom of the page as in Figure 9.
Figure 9
There is one catch. Failures in which the score is below “0” result in the closing of the restaurant until it corrects the violations. Those scores are not available on the website so CU-CitizenAccess.org will continue to request closure notices and make them publicly available on its website.
