The chart linked above shows the sometimes wide variations in the daily COVID-19 cases counts reported by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District.

The highest number reported by the state was September 8, which indicated delayed reporting. The county’s highest number was 356 cases on Sept. 11. County public health officials said their case numbers lag behind the state and university because they take time to confirm positive cases.

The chart begins when many university students began returning to the community August 15 and began getting tested twice a week by the university.

The reported cases numbers from each agency started below 20, but the reported case numbers quickly diverged.

The highest peak for the university numbers was Aug. 30, which resulted in increased restrictions for students on Sept 2. Those restrictions were eased on Sept. 15, but the daily number cases slowly declined until a recent spike at the beginning of this week.
